When AI connects purchases: what to check before budgets
Compare purchase connections, advertising and measurement with the previous 14 days; separate priorities from limitations.
Start by mapping where customers ask questions, compare options and check out after discovering a brand. In material collected from September 29 to October 12, we found purchase-related AI features alongside advertising and measurement announcements. More features do not establish better customer preference or sales. This biweekly review compares the previous 14 days and separates connections worth checking now from decisions that still lack evidence.
What continued from the previous 14 days?
The comparison period is September 15–28. Google described a US beta for Business Agent in YouTube ads and cart transfer through UCP. Business Agent handles product questions inside ads; UCP is a protocol for commerce connections. The September 24 reminder was not counted as a separate launch. Google announcement, September 16 ↗
Shopify checkout support and Airbnb AI comparison are newly observed examples in the current collection. They use different technology, but both connect discovery to a later choice. This is an editorial interpretation of suppliers' designs, not a measured change in customer behavior.
| Observation | Previous period | Current period | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Questions to purchase | Google's product questions inside ads and cart transfer | Shopify checkout support and Airbnb home comparison | Continued purchase-connection design; adoption speed and conversion-rate changes undetermined |
| Visual choice | Insufficient directly comparable evidence in this selection | OpenAI's planned visual ad test during image generation | Newly confirmed within selected material, not necessarily a market first |
| Evidence of impact | Search Console reporting for image-based search | Expanded OpenAI measurement connections and Google Conversion Lift requirements | Assess discovery, attribution and incremental impact separately |
| Weakening or tension | No matched usage or outcome measurement | No matched usage or outcome measurement | Weakening undetermined; feature expansion coexists with account and regional restrictions |
The periods contain 103 and 115 collected records. Missing dates and unreviewed material prevent a valid growth rate or topic-share comparison. “New” and “continued” describe selected events, not market rankings.
Comparison and checkout still retain customer confirmation
On September 28, Shopify announced WebMCP tools allowing browser agents to read checkout state and update supported fields. Submission follows buyer confirmation; authentication can return control to the buyer. We collected the report on September 30, so this is newly observed in the current period, not a launch dated within it. Shopify developer announcement ↗
On September 30, Airbnb announced natural-language search and wishlist home comparison starting in the US. The direction combines feature descriptions with comparison. We did not verify increased bookings or availability for Korean accounts. Airbnb announcement ↗
The marketing task is not to turn campaign copy into a list of product conditions. It is to check whether customers can substantiate an expectation during comparison, booking and payment. A “comfortable family holiday” promise can be conveyed through imagery and storytelling, then supported by verified room layouts or transport information in the details.
Consider a hypothetical travel campaign showing parents and children relaxing together. Define which conditions matter in the comparison: baby equipment, stairs or cancellation terms. Link verified details to information pages and support. This is not an actual Airbnb case or a reported outcome.
An immediate check is to follow one representative product from ad to comparison to checkout. Record whether the promise survives, whether changes in price or conditions are visible, and where customer confirmation is needed. If agent features are unavailable, start with the existing site. This prepares a more dependable flow; it does not establish completed AI readiness or sales growth.
Prepare creative hypotheses before expanding a new ad budget
On October 5, OpenAI announced a visual ad test during image generation, planned for later that month in the US with initial advertisers and Free and Go users. It states that ads are separate from generated images and do not influence answers. OpenAI announcement ↗
The plan does not guarantee purchase impact for a brand. A useful preparation is a creative hypothesis about the situation in which the brand's reason to choose becomes apparent. Writing that hypothesis and verifying account and regional access are separate tasks.
For a hypothetical household-products brand seeking the perception “less housework after work,” compare a product-only image with a scene of someone relaxing after chores. First judge whether the intended perception comes through without overstating product efficacy. An actual test would need to assess that perception separately from clicks.
Withhold a decision to transfer existing channel budgets to the new placement until eligibility, cost, context and measurement are known. Then define test size and a stopping rule. Do not assume Korean availability or use a supplier's individual case figures as expected performance.
Attributed conversions are not necessarily caused conversions
In the previous period, Google announced separate Search Console reporting for image-based searches. This identifies discovery paths; it does not prove brand preference or advertising-driven purchases. Google Search Central announcement ↗
In the current period, OpenAI announced more conversion-data connections and measurement partners, while describing incrementality work as early-stage. Incremental impact means the additional effect that would not have occurred without the ad. Data connectivity does not establish that impact for a campaign.
Google's official Conversion Lift help still restricts access and directs advertisers to an account representative. Requirements include at least 1,000 observed conversions, a USD 5,000 campaign budget and a compatible conversion action. The “self-service” story collected on October 8 is insufficient to claim universal access. The help page's own update date was not confirmed. Google Ads help ↗
A hypothetical store might receive a report of 20 purchases from a new ad, including people who would have bought anyway. The number is illustrative, not an observed result. Distinguishing attributed from additional purchases requires a comparison method and adequate data.
Keep discovery, attributed conversions, incremental impact and customer understanding or preference separate in reports. Leave unavailable measures unmeasured. If access or data is insufficient, do not relabel clicks as incremental impact.
Priorities for these two weeks
First, check the existing campaign's reason to choose and its purchase connection. Trace one product through comparison, details and checkout, and substantiate the expectation with actual information. Correct a condition customers cannot verify.
Second, prepare a small set of creative hypotheses for new ads. Specify the audience, intended perception, scene and verified account and regional eligibility. An unavailable feature remains a preparation, not implementation.
Third, decide the measurement standard before running a test: attributed conversions only, or additional impact through a separate comparison? This review provides no validated budget allocation or performance prescription. The sequence is a proposal for prioritizing small tests.
Scope and what remains unknown
The current collection covers September 29–October 12, 2026; the comparison covers September 15–28. Current records total 115, with October 7 and 8 missing. Previous records total 103, with September 22 missing. October 5 and 12 were successful collections with zero articles, not missing days. Weekends are outside the regular collection.
The selected evidence consists of eight current and five previous raw records consolidated into six events after merging republication and reminders. The four current events include verified help-page requirements; not all were launched during the period. The two previous events and earlier reports were not counted as additional independent evidence. Held and rejected records were excluded from adopted evidence.
Collection favors search, advertising and commerce platforms. Separate customer-behavior observations total zero in both periods. Preference, purchase outcomes and adoption in other industries or regions remain unverified. Supplier announcements serve as observations, not proof of whole-market trends or causal impact.
