As AI changes search, recommendations, and access to content, publishers and marketers are testing both visibility on AI platforms and direct audience acquisition.

Brief

As AI changes search, recommendation, and content access paths, publishers and marketers are testing both exposure methods on AI platforms and direct reader acquisition methods.

  1. 01Analysis surrounding source selection criteria for AI search continued.

Reddit AI search tended to more often select formal comments with many recommendations, and in an experiment where only the order of search results was changed, the difference in citations was not significant.

  2. 02Content access and monetization methods are also in the experimental stage.

Publishers are carrying out licensing, subscription, sponsorship, and events in parallel, and in one experiment, a per-page payment was attached to each page request from an AI agent.

Publisher’s profit and reader strategy in preparation for ‘Google Zero’

WHAT CHANGED

Publishers attending the Digiday Publishing Summit shared their experiments in response to declining search traffic and the growing impact of AI platforms.

WHY IT MATTERS

We can see how the way we design content distribution and reader relationships changes as our dependence on search traffic changes.

Publishers are experimenting with various revenue and distribution methods to respond to declining search traffic and the expanding influence of AI platforms. There were complaints that the terms and indicators of AI content licensing contracts were unclear and the contract models were different. Attendees said they are combining AI exposure optimization and direct reader strategies with subscriptions, sponsorships, events, and premium advertising.

Reddit AI search, tendency to select formal comments with many recommendations more often

WHAT CHANGED

In the researchers' analysis, Reddit AI search tended to more often select formal comments that had already received a lot of recommendations as the answer source.

WHY IT MATTERS

You can look at what post characteristics appear together when community content becomes the source of AI answers.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign analyzed 10,000 questions from 20 subreddits related to advice and support. The researchers compared 30,000 responses from Reddit's AI search with 14.68 million comments, and found that the selected comments were related to the score ranking within the thread, the location and timing of the comment, its length, and whether or not it included an external link. However, because this is an observational study, the researchers stated that formal writing should not be interpreted as causing comment selection.

AI agent approach experiment with 1 cent payment per page

WHAT CHANGED

One author set up x402 payment terms of 1 cent per page on his site and tested five payments with agents such as Claude Code.

WHY IT MATTERS

This is an example showing the process of linking payment and content delivery when an AI agent requests content.

This experiment confirms the flow of an AI agent requesting a page, paying, and receiving content. Testnet USDC, which has no real monetary value, was used for payment. There are no cases yet where an external search crawler has paid for the costs, and I have tested five cases through Claude Code, which I run myself.

AI search citations, limited differences in experiments where only the order of results was changed

WHAT CHANGED

In the GPT-5.4 search agent experiment, 56 pairs of identical sources with only the order changed resulted in a citation rate estimate of 0.0 percentage points.

WHY IT MATTERS

This shows that when looking at citation results from AI searches, we need to look at differences in source relevance and quality, not just search rankings.

For non-reviewed dictionary papers, we examined citation changes by changing the source order and format in the GPT-5.4 search agent using Exa as the search provider. In saved conversations, the first result had a citation rate of 85.1% and the fifth result had a citation rate of 42.8%. However, in a 56-pair experiment in which only the order of the same sources was changed, the estimate was 0.0 percentage points, and the researchers explained that the raw ranking gap may also reflect differences in the relevance and quality of the sources.
