Platform checkout and merchant checkout are being tested side by side in Google AI shopping
Google distinguishes between native platform checkout and transfer to a merchant cart through UCP, while a limited test in India has shown purchases from selected Flipkart listings inside Gemini and AI Mode. It is not confirmed whether the test uses UCP, and actual usage and conversion effects remain unknown.
Confirmed observations
On September 16, 2026, Google announced that its Universal Commerce Protocol integration hub in Merchant Center provides testing for merchant-cart transfer and checkout flows. The capabilities are being introduced in stages in the United States, with Australia and Canada scheduled for early the following year. The announcement also covered Merchant Center AI performance insights and a Business Agent test for YouTube ads, but this report focuses only on cart transfer and checkout paths.
Google's developer documentation treats Transfer to merchant cart and Native checkout on Google as separate UCP capabilities. The first transfers items added on Google to the merchant's cart, where the shopper completes checkout, and requires a Cart API implementation. The second completes checkout on Google. A merchant may choose either capability or both.
Google provides a simplified verification path and sandbox testing for merchants implementing cart transfer only. However, Google Help says access to onboarding follows technical implementation, an application, and merchant selection. Product documentation should therefore be distinguished from actual availability to every merchant.
In April 2026, Google India announced shopping features in Gemini and AI Mode that provide product listings, comparison tables, prices, and places to buy. That official description focused on exploration and comparison and did not mention a Flipkart checkout test.
On September 27, 2026, TechCrunch reported observing a limited test in which some users in India saw a Buy button on selected Flipkart products and entered a Flipkart-branded checkout flow without leaving the AI interface. The reported plan for a broader October rollout came from an unnamed source and has not been confirmed through a launch announcement from Google or Flipkart. It is also unconfirmed whether the test uses the published UCP capabilities.
Verisca interpretation
AI shopping does not appear to have a single fixed point of purchase completion. Merchant-cart transfer is an official integration option, while the limited Flipkart test indicates that a merchant-branded checkout can also appear inside an AI interface. Brands and merchants therefore need to distinguish which system handles product discovery, cart creation, checkout, and the order experience for each path.
This is a supply-side product change. The available material does not show which path customers actually use or whether any path produces more completed purchases than standard product links or other checkout methods. Possible effects on the purchase stage remain a measurement hypothesis.
Follow-up validation
- How many transferred-cart sessions actually occur for merchants that enable UCP cart transfer?
- After transfer, what are the rates of cart restoration, checkout completion, and abandonment on the merchant site?
- For the same product, can behavior be compared across merchant-site transfer, native Google checkout, and merchant-branded checkout inside an AI interface?
- Does the Flipkart test use a published UCP capability or a separate bilateral integration?
- Can Merchant Center UCP analytics distinguish transfer clicks from completed orders?

Limitations
- The two September 16 news articles cover the same Google announcement and are not treated as independent evidence of usage or performance.
- The Flipkart test is based on a single TechCrunch observation and has not been confirmed through a launch document from Google or Flipkart. The October expansion mentioned by an unnamed source remains a plan rather than a released capability.
- It is unconfirmed whether the Flipkart test uses UCP. Merchant-level access, transferred-cart volume, order conversion, and customer satisfaction are also unknown.
- Expansion to Australia and Canada is planned and is not treated as current availability.
- The existing volume of Google's native UCP checkout has not been independently verified and is not used as a proxy for adoption of cart transfer.
